Tributes for 20-Year-Old Killed in NSW Weir Crash

Muhammad Kashif, a 20-year-old man from Western Sydney, has been remembered as a kind and lively cricket enthusiast after tragically losing his life in a car crash at a New South Wales weir. The incident occurred around 1:15 am on Wednesday when the vehicle he was traveling in plunged into the water near Audley Weir, located in the Royal National Park, and became completely submerged. Kashif, who was in the passenger seat, could not escape the sinking car.

Tributes Flow for Young Victim

Kashif’s body was recovered by police divers hours after the accident. The 20-year-old alleged driver managed to escape the submerged vehicle and swam to the surface, where he was treated for hypothermia. Kashif’s close friend Adeel Abbas expressed the shock felt by those who knew him, describing him as an energetic and always smiling individual. "We are all in shock," Abbas told 7NEWS.

Family friends have described Kashif as a devoted son who worked tirelessly to support his parents and two younger sisters. A GoFundMe fundraiser set up in his memory highlights his role as a pillar of strength for his family, both emotionally and financially. "His sudden passing has left a deep void," the fundraiser states.

Promising Cricketer Remembered

The young man was also a talented fast bowler and a cherished member of his local cricket community. The Fairfield Liverpool Cricket Association, which Kashif represented in 2022 and 2023, recalled his passion for the sport, noting that he "played cricket with his friends on a Sunday at every opportunity possible." The Sydney Smash Cricket League expressed disbelief at his death, calling him a warm and kind-hearted person both on and off the field.

Charges Laid Against Drivers

The surviving driver, who allegedly crashed with another vehicle moments before entering the weir, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving. A second driver, an 18-year-old on his P-plates, has also been charged in connection with the crash. He is accused of racing the older driver, according to Sunrise reports. The younger driver faces multiple charges, including driving while license suspended, not complying with P-plate restrictions, using a mobile phone while driving, and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

Both men have been granted conditional bail and are scheduled to appear before Sutherland Local Court on June 18.
