Canberra Teen Cameron Myers Shatters Australian 1500m Record in Stunning Victory

Cameron Myers, a 19-year-old athlete from Canberra, has once again demonstrated his exceptional talent by breaking another significant record in the world of athletics. At the Maurie Plant Meet held in Melbourne on Saturday night, Myers delivered a breathtaking performance that left a crowd of 10,000 fans in awe.

A Record-Breaking Run

Myers clocked an impressive time of 3:30.42 in the 1500m event, securing victory and cementing his status as one of Australia's most promising young sports stars. This time not only earned him the win but also established the fastest 1500m run ever recorded on Australian soil.

Legendary commentator Bruce McAveney, during the Channel 7 broadcast, praised Myers enthusiastically, stating, "We have seen a champion. He's a couple of cricket pitches in front... it is amazing. He's run the fastest time by anyone in Australia and he's 19 years of age."

Surpassing a World Record Holder

Myers' remarkable achievement surpassed the previous Australian record of 3:31.25, which was set by Hicham El Guerrouj, the current world record holder. This performance marks the second-fastest time in Myers' burgeoning career, highlighting his consistent improvement and dedication to the sport.

In the race, Myers finished ahead of Adam Spencer, who came in second with a time of 3:37.51, and Callum Davies, who took third place with 3:39.03 at Lakeside Stadium.

Overcoming Challenges

Reflecting on his victory, Myers shared, "It's awesome. I haven't really been able to do too much speed work because I cooked my hammy in training. But I had the crowd behind me and I felt good, so I just kept pushing onwards."

Under the guidance of coach Dick Telford, Myers has shown steady progress each year. He is already the world under-20 record holder and narrowly missed selection for the Paris Olympics in 2024, underscoring his potential on the international stage.

A Spectacular Season Start

The Maurie Plant Meet served as Myers' first outdoor competition of the season, following an undefeated indoor campaign. Recently, he made headlines in New York by becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious Wanamaker Mile, setting a new Australian indoor record with a time that beat Ollie Hoare's previous mark of 3:50.77 on the same track.

This triumph in the United States was part of a successful week for Myers, as he also secured an Australian men's record for the fastest 3000m at the Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Myers has set his sights on competing in the Diamond League events in Stockholm and Oslo later this year. Additionally, he hopes to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this July, aiming to continue his ascent in the world of athletics.

Myers expressed his excitement about the Melbourne meet, saying, "The time was good. I didn't have any expectations, I just wanted to run fast and it was more about executing a good run for me. It's awesome, so electric and it's such a good environment. I'm so pleased to be out here."

With his record-breaking performances and unwavering determination, Cameron Myers is poised to become a leading figure in Australian and global athletics, inspiring fans and fellow athletes alike with his extraordinary achievements.
