Australian Athletes Slam Queensland's 2032 Olympic Rowing Venue Choice
Australian athletes have strongly criticized the Queensland government's decision to proceed with hosting the rowing and canoeing events at the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton for the 2032 Olympic Games. The controversy stems from a feasibility study by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA), which reportedly identified multiple issues with the river venue, including concerns about fairness and safety for competitors.
Champion Rower Expresses Embarrassment and Frustration
Five-time world champion rower and triple Olympic gold medalist Drew Ginn voiced his dismay, stating he was "embarrassed" that the Fitzroy River remains under consideration. He emphasized that the Olympic Games should not be politicized and called for alignment between the Olympic movement, Rowing Australia, and the government on athlete-centric decisions. Ginn highlighted that the report found necessary work like dredging and widening sections of the river to address river flow, which could impact race fairness.
Advocacy for a Purpose-Built Alternative
Ginn advocates for constructing a new man-made course in Moreton Bay, north of Brisbane, similar to the Penrith Regatta Centre used in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He cited major issues with the Fitzroy River, such as its distance—seven hours from Brisbane—and natural challenges like flooding and flow variability. "Imagine the 100m sprint having a travelator in lane six going forward, and on lane one going backwards and thinking that's fair for athletes," Ginn analogized, stressing that such conditions are unacceptable for elite competition.
Government Response and Ongoing Debate
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie defended the decision, describing findings in the unreleased GIICA report as "positive" and reaffirming that rowing will be held on the Fitzroy River to deliver a Games for all of Queensland. However, Ginn expressed frustration, urging the government to prioritize athlete needs and avoid past mistakes, referencing the costly regional approach of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. World Rowing supports the Moreton Bay proposal, backed by local Mayor Peter Flannery.
Safety and Practical Concerns Raised
Additional concerns include the presence of freshwater crocodiles in the Fitzroy River, though organizing body head Andrew Liveris dismissed attack fears. Ginn argued that rivers are unsuitable for high-stakes events due to unpredictable flooding and flow issues, which could undermine years of athlete preparation. He called for swift action to finalize venues, ensuring the Brisbane Games become a celebrated showcase of Australian sport.
The debate underscores tensions between regional development goals and athlete welfare, with calls for a reassessment to ensure a fair and safe Olympic experience.
