Cyclone Vaianu Poses Life-Threatening Risk to Supercars Finale in New Zealand
A severe cyclone is threatening to disrupt the concluding race of the Supercars championship round on New Zealand's North Island, with officials closely monitoring the situation. While practice sessions on Friday and two scheduled races on Saturday are expected to proceed as planned in Taupo, the forecast for Sunday has raised significant concerns.
Weather Warnings and Event Uncertainty
Cyclone Vaianu is predicted to impact northern regions of New Zealand on Sunday, casting doubt over the 60-lap race that is set to wrap up the weekend's motorsport action. Supercars officials convened on Thursday to assess the risks, with further updates anticipated later on Friday.
"Supercars is working closely with local and government officials, emergency services and event stakeholders to monitor forecast activity from Cyclone Vaianu," a spokesperson stated on Friday. "At this stage, the ITM Taupō Super 440 will proceed as scheduled. Supercars will take all measures to ensure public safety and responsibility at this event."
Severe Conditions Forecast for Sunday
MetService, New Zealand's national meteorological authority, has issued warnings for extreme weather conditions in Taupo on Sunday. "For all of the North Island, there is high confidence winds will rise to severe gale in exposed places," a statement indicated. "The combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation makes this a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event."
The Sunday program in Taupo includes:
- Qualifying sessions
- A top-10 shootout
- The third and final race of the weekend
In contrast, Saturday's schedule features two 37-lap sprint races, which are currently expected to go ahead without interruption.
Event Details and Championship Standings
Practice sessions will kick off the Taupo round on Friday, marking the third consecutive year of racing at this scenic circuit. This event is the first of two back-to-back weekends in New Zealand, with the touring car series set to move south for its inaugural race in Christchurch the following Friday.
In the championship standings, Chaz Mostert leads with 5306 points, followed closely by Will Brown with 5244 points and Broc Feeney with 5240 points. The potential cancellation of Sunday's race could have significant implications for the title race, adding an extra layer of drama to an already tense situation.
Supercars organizers emphasize that public safety remains their top priority, and any decisions regarding the event will be made in consultation with emergency services and local authorities. Fans and participants are advised to stay updated through official channels as the weather situation develops.
