The Newcastle Knights have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their Magic Round encounter, with star centre Bradman Best ruled out of Sunday's clash against the Gold Coast Titans due to a calf injury sustained at training.
Club medical staff have confirmed that Best is expected to miss approximately three weeks of action, a period that will also rule him out of contention for New South Wales State of Origin selection. The Knights announced the news on Saturday, just 24 hours before the scheduled 2pm kick-off at Suncorp Stadium.
Injury timeline and recovery
Best's absence will see him miss the Magic Round fixture, as well as potential games against the Parramatta Eels at home and the Melbourne Storm away. Newcastle also have a bye next week, which means Best could be sidelined for up to three matches depending on his response to rehabilitation.
“Bradman Best has sustained a calf injury at training and has been ruled out of this Sunday’s Magic Round fixture,” the Knights said in a statement. “Club medical staff anticipate Best will miss approximately three matches, with his return to play to be determined by his response to rehabilitation.”
The injury comes at a frustrating time for the 23-year-old, who only returned to the field a fortnight ago after recovering from a groin issue that forced him to miss multiple games. Despite the setbacks, Best had shown promising form in Newcastle's past two outings.
Team changes and squad adjustments
In response to Best's withdrawal, the Knights have reshuffled their lineup. Versatile back Fletcher Hunt has been promoted to the starting side to fill the centre position against the Titans. Forward Francis Manuleleua, who was originally named as a reserve, has been elevated to the bench in place of Hunt.
Outside-back James Schiller remains as the 18th man, while centre Kyle McCarthy has been omitted from the match-day squad, which was reduced to 20 players on Saturday. The coaching staff have opted to carry both playmaker Sandon Smith and back-up hooker Harrison Graham on the interchange bench.
The Knights will be hoping to overcome Best's absence and secure a vital victory in the Magic Round spectacle, as they look to maintain momentum in the NRL season.
