Brumbies Unveil Legends XV: Larkham Leads Star-Studded Team with Current Stars
Brumbies Legends XV Announced: Larkham, Current Players Honoured

In a significant tribute to the club's rich history, the ACT Brumbies have officially announced their Legends XV, a star-studded lineup that highlights the franchise's enduring legacy in Australian rugby union. The selection underscores the standing of Stephen Larkham, who not only played as flyhalf but also coached four other members of this esteemed team.

A Golden Era Celebrated

Most of the Legends XV hails from the Brumbies' golden era in the early 2000s, a period marked by remarkable success and dominance in Super Rugby. As the most successful Australian club in the competition, it is no surprise that this list reads like a who's who of Aussie rugby union, with many names easily transferable to a hypothetical Wallabies Legends XV.

The lineup includes iconic figures such as George Gregan, George Smith, Stirling Mortlock, Joe Roff, Owen Finegan, Jeremy Paul, Justin Harrison, Radike Samo, and Andrew Walker. Fiji-born winger Henry Speight, who was coached by Larkham during his initial tenure, rounds out the XV, adding to the diverse talent represented.

Current Players Earn Their Place

Notably, three current Brumbies players have been honoured with spots in this legendary team: James Slipper, Allan Alaalatoa, and Rob Valetini. Coach Stephen Larkham expressed strong confidence in their abilities, suggesting they are not only worthy of this Brumbies royalty but could also feature in a Wallabies Legends team in the future.

Larkham emphasised the crucial role these players will play in the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season. He praised Slipper's leadership, both on and off the field, noting his seamless return in a recent game. Alaalatoa, despite being sidelined with a back injury at the start of the season, is recognised as a world-class tighthead and the team's captain, making him irreplaceable. Valetini's consistent performance, highlighted by an outstanding game against the Waratahs, cements his status as one of the team's most valuable players.

Injury Update and Season Outlook

Regarding Alaalatoa's injury, Larkham provided an update, stating that while there is no fixed return date yet, progress is positive, with more information expected in the coming weeks. The Brumbies are set to kick off their campaign against the Western Force in Perth on Saturday night, marking their second trip across the Nullarbor in a fortnight after a pre-season trial.

Reflecting on the trial loss of 42-12, where they trailed 35-0 at half-time, Larkham acknowledged the lessons learned. He highlighted improvements in travel logistics and coaching preparation, ensuring the team is better equipped for the challenges ahead. The Force is anticipated to be stronger than in the trial, setting the stage for a competitive season opener.
