Western Force Announce New Leadership Trio for 2026 Season

Western Force Reveal New Leadership Structure for 2026 Super Rugby Pacific Campaign

The Western Force have officially announced their leadership group for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, with Jeremy Williams returning as captain and Ben Donaldson and Nick Champion de Crespigny stepping into the vice-captain roles. This new trio represents a shift from the previous leadership setup, moving from veteran mentors to a peer-driven approach.

From Mentors to Peers: A Changing of the Guard

When Williams was first appointed captain at just 23 years old, he was guided by experienced vice-captains Nic White and Michael Wells. Now, as he enters his third season at the helm, the established Wallabies lock will be supported by two contemporaries. This transition marks a significant evolution in the team's leadership dynamics, with the trio pledging to lead by staying true to their authentic selves.

Williams reflected on his growth, stating, "That's the best way to lead and that's something I've learned, to just be yourself. You can't really change when you get in the position; it's just lead by the way you lead." He highlighted how his exposure to Wallabies veterans like James Slipper and Allan Alaalatoa has shaped his approach, emphasising the importance of actions matching words.

Leadership Roles and Support Network

The leadership trio will be bolstered by a broader leadership group that includes:

  • Reigning Nathan Sharpe Medalist Tom Robertson
  • Wallabies great Kurtley Beale
  • Newly-signed former All Black George Bridge

Champion de Crespigny, who unexpectedly captained the Wallabies in a one-off match against Japan in October, shared how he leaned on Williams during that experience. "I roomed with Jeremy during the week, and we were able to have lots of discussions," he said, noting the value of shared leadership responsibilities.

Individual Strengths and On-Field Dynamics

Donaldson, as a fly-half, brings a natural leadership presence to the backs, explaining, "You're leading the boys around the field, you're making the calls, you're leading meetings throughout the week. That's probably helped me move into this role." Williams praised his vice-captains' unique qualities, describing Donaldson as calm and Champion de Crespigny as an "absolute beast on the field."

Despite their professional roles, Donaldson humorously clarified that Williams' captaincy does not extend to their shared living arrangement, quipping, "He's the skipper here, but definitely not at home."

As the Western Force prepare for the looming Super Rugby Pacific season, this new leadership structure aims to foster a cohesive and driven environment, with authenticity at its core.
