Western Force's Finals Aspirations Fade in 24-14 Defeat to Chiefs
The Western Force's challenging Super Rugby Pacific campaign continued on Saturday, as they suffered a 24-14 loss to the Chiefs at HBF Park. This defeat leaves the Force languishing near the bottom of the standings, with their hopes of securing a finals berth appearing increasingly remote.
Missed Opportunities Haunt Force in Tight Contest
Despite a valiant effort, the Force failed to capitalize on key moments, particularly in the final quarter of the match. After battling back to level the scores at 14-14 in the second half, they squandered a golden opportunity to tie the game when the Chiefs were reduced to 14 men due to a yellow card. This missed chance proved costly, as the Chiefs held firm to secure the victory.
The Force's defensive efforts were commendable, with Nick Champion de Crespigny making 24 tackles and Vaiolini Ekuasi contributing 20. However, their inability to convert pressure into points, coupled with five losses from six games, has left them 10 points adrift of a finals spot and without a bonus point from this match.
Chiefs Overcome Slow Start to Seal Win
The Chiefs, known for their fast starts this season, were initially contained by the Force's territorial pressure and ball retention. Early struggles in their backline limited their attacking width, but they broke through in the 21st minute when Luke Jacobson scored the opening try after a sustained 26-phase assault.
Although the Force responded with a try from Max Burey, set up by George Bridge's aerial contest, the Chiefs regained the lead just before halftime through Josh Jacomb's untouched run. In the second half, Samisoni Taukei'aho's try and Damian McKenzie's accurate kicking extended the Chiefs' advantage, despite a late push from the Force that included a near-try by Darby Lancaster.
Season Outlook Grim for Western Force
With only six games played, the Force's season is already in jeopardy. Their inability to secure bonus points and close out tight matches has compounded their struggles. While they showed resilience in defense, offensive inefficiencies and missed opportunities, such as failing to score during the Chiefs' yellow card period, have left their finals dreams hanging by a thread.
As the Super Rugby Pacific season progresses, the Force must address these issues quickly if they are to revive their campaign and avoid another disappointing finish.
