The warning was formally released by WA Police at 1.15pm on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. A police spokesman confirmed that three particular iPhone models could be impacted after undergoing a recent software update.

The WA Police Force has been made aware some older Apple devices are currently experiencing an issue where they may not be able to make or receive phone calls, including emergency calls to triple-0, the spokesman stated.

Affected iPhone Models and Software

The devices identified as potentially vulnerable include:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X

These models are specifically at risk if they have been updated to the iOS 16.7.13 software version. Authorities are strongly advising users of these Apple devices to delay any further software updates until the problem is fully resolved.

In a separate statement, telecommunications giant Telstra confirmed they are actively working with Apple to investigate the concerning issue as a matter of high priority.

We’re currently investigating an issue making and receiving calls, including calls to 000, on older Apple devices, Telstra's statement read. We’re working on this as a priority with Apple and will share updates as we have them.

Telstra has echoed the police advice, recommending that customers using the affected devices postpone any software updates until confirmation that the issue has been properly addressed and fixed.
