Blackwood River Arts Trail Returns for Sixth Annual Celebration
Amid the breathtaking scenery of the Blackwood River Valley, visitors can immerse themselves in a vibrant living gallery, where nature's artistry blends seamlessly with human creativity. This autumn, the region transforms into a canvas of color, particularly at spots like the Golden Valley Tree Park in Balingup, Western Australia's largest arboretum, offering a spectacle that rivals the works of renowned impressionist painters.
Charming Towns and Local Delights
The towns of Nannup, Bridgetown, Donnybrook-Balingup, and Boyup Brook exude rustic charm, rich history, and cozy atmospheres during the autumn season. Complementing these locales are local wineries, cideries, and breweries, such as Sunnyhurst Winery, Whimwood Estate, Balingup Fruit Winery, and the Cidery & Blackwood Valley Brewing Company, adding to the area's appeal.
To unite these natural and built environments under a banner of local arts and crafts, the Blackwood River Arts Trail offers an unparalleled experience. Now in its sixth year, this annual event runs from March 28 to April 6, providing a 10-day community celebration of life through the lens of art.
Behind-the-Scenes Access to Local Artists
The trail meanders through the valley, granting behind-the-scenes access to more than 62 artists across 37 venues. Visitors can drop into home studios and intimate small galleries, engage in conversations with local artists and craftspeople working in various mediums, and potentially make purchases. Highlights include:
- The fine furniture creations of Phil Laird and Kim Roycroft.
- Magical portraits in oils and mixed media by Lori Pensini.
- At Darlimurla Garden Studio, paintings by Helen Reading, Frances Kilpatrick, and Philip Berry alongside embroidery by Judith Morrisey.
In Nannup, artist Chrissie Parrot AO presents Parrot Fernaylia, an exhibition featuring tiny theatre sets and embellished artworks made from vintage fabrics, figurines, and found objects, creating intimate visual storytelling. The trail also showcases a diverse array of sculpture, landscape art, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and printmaking to delight eclectic collectors.
Additional Attractions and Festivities
Beyond the art, the towns' streets are lined with enticing eateries and tempting gift shops. The Blackwood River Film Festival adds to the cultural offerings, with screenings in historic community spaces like the Bridgetown Repertory Theatre and Nannup Town Hall. Further attractions include the Golden Valley Tree Park, Barrabup Pool in Nannup, Greenbushes Discovery Centre, and Donnybrook Apple Fun Park.
