City of Gosnells Unveils Expanded Three-Day Anzac Day Commemorations

The City of Gosnells is set to host an extensive three-day program for Anzac Day commemorations this year, marking a significant expansion of its traditional observances. This initiative aims to deepen community engagement and honor the legacy of Australian and New Zealand service personnel through a series of events at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre (DRPAC) from April 23 to 25.

Mayor Emphasizes Commitment to Anzac Legacy

Mayor Terresa Lynes highlighted that the expanded program reflects the city's dedication to preserving and promoting the Anzac legacy. "Anzac Day is a defining element of our national story," she stated. "By broadening our commemorations, we are creating more opportunities for the community to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and service of our military personnel, while ensuring these stories continue to resonate with future generations."

Key Events at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre

The DRPAC program includes two notable stage productions:

  • 21 Hearts: This production tells the powerful story of Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the Banka Island massacre during World War II, offering a poignant tribute to her resilience and bravery.
  • Unforgotten: Songs of Australians at War: Presented by Fred Smith, this performance features musical tributes that capture the experiences and emotions of Australians in conflict, providing a unique artistic perspective on wartime history.

In addition to these productions, the program encompasses various activities designed to foster reflection, education, and intergenerational understanding within the community.

Sponsorship and Ticket Information

The events are proudly sponsored by SDA Compass, supporting the city's efforts to enhance Anzac Day commemorations. Tickets for all DRPAC Anzac events became available on February 23 and can be accessed through the official City of Gosnells website at gosnells.wa.gov.au.

Special discounts are offered to Veteran Card holders, including a 50 percent reduction for an acrylic guided painting workshop and free entry to the Unforgotten performance, ensuring accessibility for those who have served.

Community Impact and Future Goals

Mayor Lynes emphasized that extending the Anzac events helps maintain a strong spirit of remembrance in Gosnells. "This expanded program not only honors our past but also educates and connects our community, ensuring the Anzac legacy remains vibrant and meaningful for years to come," she added.

The three-day schedule complements the traditional Gosnells RSL dawn service, march, and gunfire breakfast, providing a comprehensive tribute that caters to diverse interests and age groups.
