Israel Pledges Unrelenting Offensive Against Iran as Middle East Conflict Intensifies

The Israel Defence Force has declared its military operation against Iran will not cease until the mission is fully accomplished, according to its chief international spokesperson. Nadav Shoshani emphasized to 7NEWS that the conflict, which is rapidly escalating across the region, represents a fight for freedom and stability, warning it could soon impact nations like Australia.

Expansion of Hostilities into Lebanon

On Tuesday afternoon local time, Israel launched simultaneous airstrikes targeting Tehran, Iran's capital, and Beirut in Lebanon. The Israeli Air Force stated these attacks were aimed at military objectives linked to the Iranian regime and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. However, a senior Hezbollah official, Mohamoud Komati, asserted that after over a year of adhering to a ceasefire since November 2024, the latest strikes have exhausted the group's patience, compelling it to return to resistance and engage in open war with Israel.

Komati criticized the Lebanese government for labeling Hezbollah's actions as illegal and demanding disarmament, accusing it of failing to halt Israeli airstrikes that have occurred almost daily for nearly 15 months. He declared, "The Zionist enemy wanted an open war, which it has not stopped since the ceasefire agreement. So let it be an open war."

Humanitarian Crisis and Displacement

The escalating violence has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, with thousands of Syrians fleeing from Lebanon into Syria to escape Israeli strikes over the past two days. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, reported that while 3900 to 4400 people typically cross during Ramadan, on Monday alone, 10,629 individuals crossed, most of them Syrian refugees. Azzam Sweiri, a Syrian farm worker, described chaotic scenes as he fled, taking 10 to 12 hours to travel just 30 or 40 kilometers, and later learning his neighbor's house was hit by an Israeli airstrike.

Israeli troops have also crossed the border into Lebanon, though the IDF denies it constitutes a ground invasion, instead describing it as establishing a buffer zone.

Regional Retaliation and Broader Impacts

Meanwhile, Iran has continued to launch missiles at Israel, with sirens sounding across the country. The conflict has spread to other Middle Eastern nations, including a drone hitting Oman's largest port of Salalah and two drones being shot down in the Dhofar province, though no casualties or damage were reported. The United Arab Emirates has affirmed its defence capabilities, stating it has repelled hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones since the weekend, with minor damages attributed to interception efforts rather than successful attacks.

As the U.S. and Israeli militaries persist in their campaigns, the risk of a full-blown regional war looms larger, with ongoing strikes claiming more lives and drawing in additional players across the Middle East.
