Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv early Thursday, firing dozens of missiles and drones that struck residential areas and critical infrastructure, Ukrainian officials reported. The assault killed at least five people and wounded 30 others, marking one of the most intense bombardments of the capital in weeks.
Details of the Attack
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, air defense systems intercepted over 20 incoming projectiles, but several missiles and drones penetrated the defenses. Explosions were heard across the city as debris fell on apartment buildings, a kindergarten, and a power substation. Emergency services rushed to extinguish fires and rescue trapped residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, "Russia continues its terror against our cities. Every strike only strengthens our resolve to defend our land and our people." He reiterated calls for more Western air defense systems to protect civilian populations.
Casualties and Damage
The death toll rose to five as rescue workers pulled bodies from the rubble of a damaged residential block. At least 30 people were hospitalized, including three children, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He described the attack as "barbaric" and urged residents to stay in shelters.
Strikes also caused power outages in parts of the city, affecting thousands of households. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported that emergency crews were working to restore electricity, but warned that repairs could take days due to the extent of the damage.
International Response
The United Nations condemned the attack, with a spokesperson calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities against civilian infrastructure. The European Union and NATO also issued statements expressing solidarity with Ukraine and promising continued military aid.
Russia has not commented on the specific attack but has previously stated that its strikes target military facilities. Ukrainian officials maintain that Moscow deliberately targets civilian areas to demoralize the population.
Ongoing Conflict
The assault on Kyiv comes amid a broader escalation of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine. In recent days, attacks have also hit Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro, causing dozens of casualties. Analysts suggest Russia is attempting to pressure Ukraine ahead of expected peace negotiations later this year.
Despite the attacks, Ukrainian forces continue to hold defensive lines in the east and south. Military officials reported shooting down three Russian fighter jets in the past 24 hours, though these claims could not be independently verified.
