Gugan Gulwan's New Building Honored with Canberra Medallion
The new building of Gugan Gulwan, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth centre in Wanniassa, has won the top Canberra Medallion prize at the 2024 Architecture Awards. The award celebrates the building's outstanding design and its role in providing a safe and culturally appropriate space for Indigenous youth.
Architectural Excellence and Community Impact
Designed by architecture firm BVN, the building features a circular design inspired by a traditional Aboriginal meeting place, with a central courtyard and a curved roof that resembles a coolamon. The project cost $9.2 million and was completed in 2023. According to the Australian Institute of Architects, the building "creates a strong sense of belonging and connection to Country" for its users.
Gugan Gulwan CEO Melissa Williams said, "This award is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved. The building is already making a huge difference in the lives of young people, providing a place where they can feel proud of their culture."
Design Features and Sustainability
The building incorporates sustainable materials and passive design principles, including cross-ventilation and natural lighting. It includes a commercial kitchen, a multi-purpose hall, and outdoor spaces for cultural activities. The jury praised the building's "thoughtful integration of Indigenous knowledge and contemporary architecture."
Recognition for Indigenous Architecture
The Canberra Medallion is the highest award given by the ACT chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. This year's win highlights a growing recognition of Indigenous-designed architecture in Australia. Previous winners include the Australian War Memorial's new wing and the National Arboretum Canberra.
