A Victorian man is not only facing police action but also the wrath of his mother after an alleged drunk driving incident in Melbourne's outer suburbs.
Morning Crash in Pakenham
A 22-year-old man is facing a hefty repair bill and an uncomfortable conversation with his mother after allegedly crashing her car into a bridge while under the influence of alcohol in Pakenham, about 50 kilometres southeast of Melbourne.
Police allege the man was speeding along Irving Road, near Falling Water Drive, around 10am when he lost control of the vehicle. The car mounted a nature strip and became airborne before ploughing through several metal bollards and slamming into a bridge pylon, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged.
Driver Fled Scene
Witnesses called police, but officers say the driver fled on foot. He was found a short time later hiding inside a relative's nearby home and was taken into custody.
Pakenham officers breath-tested the man, who allegedly returned a reading of 0.15 — three times the legal limit of 0.05. He was also allegedly driving on a suspended licence, and police say a small quantity of cocaine was found in the vehicle.
Charges and Mum's Reaction
The man was released and is expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving and other traffic offences. Police noted that the worst penalty may still be to come: “explaining to his mum that her car is now a write-off.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving and the consequences that extend beyond legal penalties.
