A teenage boy bravely fought off a stranger who indecently assaulted him at a supermarket in Alice Springs on Wednesday, according to police.

Incident details

The boy, believed to be between 12 and 16 years old, was allegedly targeted by an unknown man while inside a store in the Alice Springs central business district at approximately 2:30pm.

"The victim fought off the offender who subsequently left the scene," Northern Territory police said in a statement.

Investigation and arrest

Police attended the scene and obtained closed-circuit television footage of the incident.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on Todd Street about 3:30pm, just one hour after the alleged assault.

The suspect remains in custody, and police have indicated that charges are "expected to follow" as the investigation continues.
