A 42-year-old man accused of attempting to rob the Tarago Hotel, known locally as the Loaded Dog Pub, failed to appear in Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday, prompting a magistrate to issue a warrant for his arrest.
Alleged Robbery Attempt
Police allege that on the evening of April 15, the man entered the pub in the small town of Tarago, about 50 kilometers south of Goulburn, and demanded money from the bartender while brandishing a knife. No injuries were reported, and the suspect fled empty-handed after the bartender refused to comply. Police arrested him a short time later at a nearby residence.
Court No-Show
The man was originally granted bail to appear in court on Monday, but when his name was called, he did not answer. Magistrate Roger Clisdell noted the absence and stated that the man had failed to appear as required. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest, with police now seeking to locate him.
According to court documents, the man faces one count of attempted armed robbery. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The case has been adjourned until he is apprehended and brought before the court.
Community Reaction
The incident has rattled the small community of Tarago, where crime is rare. Pub owner Sarah Thompson said, "It's a shock to everyone. We're a tight-knit town, and something like this doesn't happen often. We're just glad no one was hurt."
