Paris, a teenager from Shellharbour on the NSW south coast, has not attended a mainstream school for years. Instead, she participates in a fully online learning program that allows her to study wherever she chooses. Her mother, Shaynee, says this approach gives Paris more freedom, not less.
Why online learning works for Paris
Paris explained, “I found it was better to be homeschooled, because I can work wherever I am and whenever I want to.” The family selected a comprehensive online program that covers all subjects. Shaynee noted, “There’s a lot of different programs out there, but this one just seemed to cover everything. It’s fully online, which is wonderful. It allows us to have a lifestyle like no other.”
Misconceptions about homeschooling
Shaynee believes many people mistakenly think homeschooling is difficult, isolating, or only suitable for certain families. “I think a lot of people think that it’s really hard,” she said. “Everybody has the capability to do that — and you get to enjoy it as well. So it’s just a wonderful experience, and anybody can do it.”
Social life beyond the classroom
Far from being isolated, Paris has built a vibrant social life. She attends homeschool meetups where she crochets and pursues other hobbies. “I go to homeschool meetups, where I crochet and do my other hobby,” she said. Shaynee added, “She has a crochet group, and all these kids meet up. There’s a whole lot of activities they do, from horse riding to rock climbing. She’s probably got a better social life than me — so it’s amazing.”
Flexibility and family life
The shift to online learning has changed the family’s daily rhythm. Paris started her own ragdoll brand by watching tutorial videos online. Shaynee said her daughter can now shape her days around what works best for her. “Now she can do whatever she likes,” Shaynee said. “We have a lot of fun.”
Technology as the backbone
Reliable internet is essential for this educational model. “All the work is online, and the resources they have are just wonderful,” Shaynee said. “She can look up anything, she can research things.” The online platform allows Paris to learn in real time, stay connected with classmates and teachers, and progress without being tied to a physical classroom.
A regret and a joy
Shaynee wishes she could have offered the same option to her three older children. “I’ve got three adult kids, and I really wish I could have made that choice with them,” she said. “But it’s really wonderful being able to do it with Paris.” As for spending so much time with her mum, Paris simply said, “We crochet together.”
