Emergency services have issued a storm advice for large parts of Western Australia as a powerful cold front barrels across the state, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms through Friday and Saturday.
Heavy Rainfall Expected in Perth
Perth is expected to receive at least 15mm of rain on Friday, with the potential to reach 25mm if conditions worsen. The downpour will continue through the weekend, likely dampening outdoor plans. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned residents of a wild weekend ahead.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has issued a storm advice for the metropolitan and South West areas. The alert urges residents to be aware of potential hazards after the storm passes, such as fallen trees or damaged buildings. In case of significant damage, people are encouraged to contact the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning Canceled
A severe thunderstorm warning issued overnight by the Bureau has since been canceled. However, a marine wind warning remains in effect for the metropolitan and South West regions. Strong wind warnings have been issued for areas between Geraldton and Esperance from Friday morning, with wind speeds expected to reach between 48 and 60 kilometers per hour. These warnings will persist through Saturday for Perth, Geraldton, Lancelin, Albany, and Esperance.
Record Rainfall Across WA
As of Friday morning, the cold front has already dumped significant rainfall across Western Australia. Cape Leeuwin recorded 29mm of rain overnight, making it the wettest part of the state. In the metropolitan area, Swanbourne in Perth's west received 21.8mm before 9am. Geraldton in the Mid West saw 27.4mm of rainfall overnight, according to the Bureau's airport weather station.
This heavy rainfall comes during an unusually warm stretch of winter weather, with temperatures above average for most of the week. However, the last week of June is set to make up for the recent sunshine, with rain and cold temperatures expected to linger until Thursday.
