The long-awaited prospect of a high-speed rail link between Canberra and Sydney is edging closer to reality, with new proposals promising to dramatically reduce travel times. Currently, the journey by train takes around four hours, but future express services could cut that to under two hours.
Current Journey Times
At present, the train ride from Canberra to Sydney takes approximately four hours and 20 minutes on the fastest service. This includes stops at stations such as Goulburn and Moss Vale. The road trip by car typically takes around three hours, depending on traffic, while flying involves a short flight but adds time for airport transfers and security checks.
Proposed High-Speed Rail Options
Several proposals have been put forward for a high-speed rail corridor linking the two capitals. The most ambitious plan, from the company HyperloopTT, suggests a journey time of just 30 minutes using vacuum-tube technology. However, this is considered a long-term vision. A more conventional high-speed rail line, similar to those in Europe and Asia, could reduce travel time to around one hour and 45 minutes.
The Australian government has committed to a feasibility study into a high-speed rail network connecting Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. The study, which is expected to be completed by 2024, will examine potential routes, costs, and benefits. Early estimates suggest that a dedicated high-speed line between Canberra and Sydney could cost between $20 billion and $30 billion.
Expected Time Savings
If a high-speed rail line is built, passengers could expect a journey time of between 90 minutes and two hours from Canberra to Sydney. This would make train travel competitive with air travel when factoring in time spent getting to and from airports. The proposed route would likely include stations at Canberra Airport, Goulburn, and Sydney's Central Station or a new hub at Badgerys Creek.
Environmental benefits are also a key driver, with high-speed rail producing significantly lower carbon emissions per passenger than cars or planes. The project could also spur economic development along the corridor, particularly in regional centres like Goulburn.
Challenges and Timeline
Despite the excitement, major hurdles remain. Funding is a significant challenge, with the federal and state governments needing to agree on cost-sharing arrangements. Land acquisition and engineering challenges, particularly crossing the Great Dividing Range, will also require careful planning. If the feasibility study gives the green light, construction could begin in the late 2020s, with services potentially starting in the 2030s.
In the meantime, incremental improvements to the existing rail line are being considered, such as upgrading tracks and signalling to allow faster speeds. These could reduce the current journey time by about 30 minutes within the next few years.
The dream of a fast train between Canberra and Sydney is not new, but with growing congestion on roads and at airports, and increasing awareness of climate change, the push for high-speed rail is gaining momentum.
