Federal MP Bob Katter has issued a direct appeal to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, asking him to grant a "birthday wish" for the Far North in the upcoming federal budget. The veteran politician is pushing for major project announcements that he says are long overdue for the region.
Key Projects Sought
Katter is specifically calling for funding commitments on critical water infrastructure and road upgrades. He argues that the Far North has been neglected in previous budgets and that now is the time for action.
"This budget must deliver for the people of Far North Queensland," Katter said. "We need the government to step up and fund the projects that will secure our future."
Water Security
One of the top priorities is the construction of new dams and water storage facilities to ensure long-term water security for agriculture and communities. Katter has long advocated for the Nullinga Dam near Cairns, which he says is essential for the region's growth.
Road Infrastructure
Upgrades to the Bruce Highway and other key roads are also on the wish list. Katter says improved roads are vital for safety and economic development, particularly for freight and tourism.
"We cannot keep putting band-aid solutions on our roads. We need real investment," he added.
Political Pressure
The call comes as the Albanese government prepares to hand down its second budget. Katter, who holds the seat of Kennedy, has been a vocal critic of both major parties on regional issues. He says the government cannot afford to ignore the needs of the Far North.
"The Prime Minister has a chance to show he cares about regional Australia. This is his opportunity to make a real difference," Katter said.
Community leaders and business groups have also backed the call for increased funding, highlighting the economic potential of the region if infrastructure is improved.
The budget is expected to be delivered in May, and all eyes will be on whether the government heeds Katter's plea.
