Former Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce is set to release a new book that aims to set the record straight on his controversial tenure and provide guidance for aspiring leaders. The book, which is yet to be titled, will offer Joyce's perspective on the challenges he faced during his 15-year leadership of Australia's flagship carrier.
A Legacy of Leadership
Joyce, who stepped down as Qantas CEO in November 2023, has been a polarising figure in Australian business. Under his leadership, Qantas navigated the global financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and intense competition from low-cost carriers. However, his tenure was also marked by controversies, including the airline's decision to outsource ground handling, which led to legal battles with unions, and the grounding of the entire Qantas fleet in 2011 over industrial disputes.
Setting the Record Straight
In announcing the book, Joyce said he wanted to provide a firsthand account of the decisions made during his time at the helm. “There have been many stories told about my time at Qantas, some accurate and some not,” Joyce said in a statement. “This book is my opportunity to set the record straight and share the lessons I've learned along the way.”
The book will delve into key moments of Joyce's career, including the turnaround of Qantas after the 2011 grounding, the airline's response to the pandemic, and its eventual recovery. Joyce also aims to address criticisms head-on, offering his perspective on controversial decisions.
Inspiring Young Leaders
Beyond recounting his own experiences, Joyce intends for the book to serve as a guide for young leaders. “I want this book to be more than just a memoir,” he said. “I hope it can inspire the next generation of leaders to take on challenges with confidence and integrity.”
The book will include practical advice on leadership, decision-making, and resilience, drawing from Joyce's extensive career in the aviation industry. He will also share insights from his early days at Qantas, where he started as a graduate and worked his way up to the top job.
Industry Reaction
The announcement has generated mixed reactions within the aviation industry. Some analysts believe the book could help rehabilitate Joyce's image, while others remain sceptical. “Alan Joyce is a complex figure, and his book will likely be a must-read for anyone interested in Australian business or aviation,” said an industry expert. “But whether it changes public perception remains to be seen.”
Qantas has declined to comment on the book, but sources close to the airline suggest that current management is supportive of Joyce's project.
Publication Details
The book is expected to be published in late 2024 by a major Australian publisher. Joyce has not yet announced a title or specific release date, but he has confirmed that proceeds from the book will go to charity, supporting leadership and education programs.
Joyce's book adds to a growing list of memoirs from former Qantas executives, including his predecessor Geoff Dixon and former chairman Margaret Jackson. However, Joyce's account is expected to be the most candid and comprehensive to date.
