The City of Perth is set to transform parking in the central business district with a major technology upgrade across 12 of its boom-gated car parks, eliminating paper tickets and introducing license plate recognition systems. This change is expected to streamline entry and exit for drivers, while also opening the door for local businesses to offer parking validation to their customers, potentially reviving free parking for shoppers.
How the New System Works
The upgrade will see license plate recognition technology automatically read and record number plates as vehicles enter and exit the car parks. This eliminates the need for paper tickets, reducing waste and improving efficiency. The system will also enable nearby businesses to validate parking online for their customers if they choose, which could include discounts or complimentary parking. Event organisers will be able to provide digital codes for discounted or complimentary parking at festivals, concerts, markets, and other city events.
Affected Car Parks
The 12 car parks undergoing the upgrade are: Citiplace, Convention Centre, Council House, Cultural Centre, Elder Street, Goderich Street, His Majesty’s, Mayfair Street, Pier Street, Regal Place, Roe Street, and State Library. Motorists are advised to expect disruptions during the installation period, with temporary signage and alternative parking arrangements likely to be in place.
Recent Parking Changes
The City of Perth has overhauled parking in the city over the past two years. In February 2025, rates were increased, and free night parking was scrapped. Exactly a year later, further cost hikes were introduced, and the amount of free parking was reduced. The new ticketless system is part of ongoing efforts to modernise parking infrastructure and improve the visitor experience.
While the exact timeline for the upgrade has not been announced, the City of Perth has indicated that work will begin in the coming months. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated via the City of Perth website for details on disruptions and new parking validation options.
