A Geelong homeowner has come forward with allegations that a timber flooring contractor accepted an $11,000 deposit and subsequently delivered only excuses for months instead of laying the promised floor. The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared their frustrating experience in an effort to warn others about potential pitfalls when hiring tradespeople.
The Initial Agreement
In early 2023, the homeowner engaged a local timber flooring specialist to install new flooring in their residence. The tradie requested a substantial deposit of $11,000 to secure the materials and commence work. Trusting the professional, the homeowner paid the sum, expecting the project to be completed within a few weeks.
A Pattern of Delays
However, as weeks turned into months, the tradie provided a series of excuses for the delays. These included claims of supplier issues, personal illness, and scheduling conflicts. The homeowner reported repeated attempts to contact the tradie, only to be met with vague promises and further postponements.
“Each time I called, there was a new reason why the work couldn’t start,” the homeowner said. “I felt like I was being strung along, and my patience was wearing thin.”
Lack of Communication
As the situation escalated, the tradie became increasingly difficult to reach. Phone calls went unanswered, and messages were ignored. The homeowner began to suspect that the deposit might have been misused, potentially for other projects or personal expenses.
“I started to worry that I might never see my money again,” the homeowner added. “It was a significant amount for our family, and we had planned our budget around the renovation.”
Seeking Resolution
After months of frustration, the homeowner decided to take action. They contacted consumer affairs authorities and sought legal advice regarding the unpaid deposit. The case highlights the risks associated with large upfront payments to contractors, especially without a formal contract or payment schedule.
Consumer advocates recommend that homeowners avoid paying more than 10-20% of the total project cost as a deposit, and always ensure a written agreement is in place. They also advise checking references and reviews before hiring any tradie.
Industry Response
The Master Builders Association of Victoria has been contacted for comment. They emphasized the importance of using licensed and insured contractors, and suggested that homeowners verify credentials through official registers.
“Unfortunately, stories like this are not uncommon,” a spokesperson said. “We urge consumers to do their due diligence and never pay large sums upfront without safeguards.”
Ongoing Investigation
The homeowner has filed a complaint with the Victorian Building Authority, which is currently investigating the matter. The tradie has not publicly responded to the allegations. The homeowner hopes that by sharing their story, others will be more cautious when engaging tradespeople.
“I just want to prevent someone else from going through this ordeal,” the homeowner concluded. “It’s been a stressful and costly lesson.”
