Small Businesses Neglected in 2026 Budget Says Studio Owner
Small Businesses Neglected in 2026 Budget: Studio Owner

The owner of Revival Studios, Newton Tran, has expressed disappointment with the 2026 Federal Budget, stating that small businesses are consistently neglected in government spending priorities. Speaking after the budget announcement, Tran argued that while large corporations and multinationals receive significant tax breaks and incentives, small enterprises—the backbone of the Australian economy—are left to struggle with rising costs and minimal support.

Budget Highlights Miss the Mark for Small Business

Tran pointed out that the budget's focus on infrastructure and defense spending does little to alleviate the pressures faced by small business owners. "We're never going to be the focus," he said. "The government talks about supporting small businesses, but when it comes to actual measures, we're an afterthought." The budget included some measures for small businesses, such as extended instant asset write-off provisions and energy bill relief, but Tran argued these are insufficient given the current economic climate.

Rising Costs and Compliance Burdens

The studio owner highlighted that small businesses are grappling with increased operational costs, including rent, utilities, and wages, while also facing complex regulatory requirements. "Every year, there are new compliance obligations that cost us time and money," Tran said. "We don't have the resources to hire armies of accountants and lawyers like big companies do." He called for more targeted assistance, such as reduced payroll taxes and streamlined red tape.

Call for a Small Business Champion

Tran suggested that the government should appoint a dedicated minister or advocate for small business within the cabinet to ensure their needs are addressed. "We need someone who understands our challenges and can fight for us in the corridors of power," he said. "Without that, we'll continue to be overlooked." The budget's lack of a comprehensive small business strategy has been criticized by industry groups, who argue that small enterprises employ nearly half of Australia's workforce and deserve greater recognition.

Despite the criticism, Tran remains committed to his business and the broader small business community. "We're resilient, but we need the government to step up," he concluded. "The budget should reflect the importance of small businesses to our economy and communities."
