Telco Unleashes AI 'Honey Pot' Bots to Combat Scammers
In a bold move against the rising tide of fraud, a leading telecommunications company has deployed an advanced AI-powered defence system, including 'honey pot' bots designed to waste scammers' time while gathering critical intelligence. This innovative approach aims to protect mobile users from the relentless barrage of scam texts and phone calls that have become an unfortunate norm.
Multi-Layered Defence Strategy
Vodafone's senior customer security, fraud and scam governance manager, Amelia Limbrick, revealed that the telco blocked over 60 million scam text messages and 37 million scam calls in 2025 alone. She explained, "We use a multi-layered approach. Machine learning is trained to detect scam language and identify more fraudulent activities, including authentication around numbers to ensure services are legitimate and protect our customers."
AI-Powered Fraud Prevention
Collaborating with apate.ai, an AI-driven fraud prevention service, Vodafone has implemented a system to divert scam calls. Limbrick noted, "Instead of just blocking these calls, since April, we've been routing scam traffic to bots that impersonate customers and engage with scammers. Initially, the goal was to waste their time, but we've also gathered fascinating intelligence, uncovering their tactics, impersonations, and methods we previously missed."
Common Scams and Personal Experience
Limbrick highlighted that impersonation-based scams, aimed at stealing money, are among the most prevalent and challenging to detect. Even with her expertise, she nearly fell victim to a scam. "I received a call from someone claiming to be my bank, stating my credit card was compromised. After checking my app, it seemed legitimate, so I spoke with the scammer for 11 minutes. He had all my details, but when he asked for a one-time code, I refused and contacted my bank to confirm it was a scam," she shared.
Advice for Consumers
For scam calls that slip through, Limbrick offers straightforward guidance:
- Be cautious with unsolicited calls and avoid sharing codes or personal information.
- Consult resources like Scamwatch or the Vodafone website for updates on current scams.
- Remember that falling for a scam is not a personal failure; it's manipulation by professionals.
