Swan Yacht Club Unveils New Green Space After $150,000 Riverfront Revamp
The Swan Yacht Club in East Fremantle has officially opened a new multi-use green space, created from a former slipway that overlooks the scenic Swan River. This redevelopment, which cost $150,000, was funded as an election commitment and was unveiled during a recent club open day, marking a significant milestone in the club's ongoing transformation.
Part of a Broader $5 Million Marina Upgrade
This new green space is a key component of a comprehensive $5 million overhaul of the club's marina and riverfront facilities. Previous enhancements to the precinct have included the introduction of floating saunas, a marquee tent, and a pop-up sea container bar, all aimed at boosting the club's appeal and functionality.
The revitalised area is designed to support a wide array of community and commercial activities, such as outdoor markets, live music performances, corporate functions, weddings, and private events. Additionally, the project involved creating new planting zones and reinstating native vegetation, which enhances the natural environment and promotes sustainability.
Community and Political Support for the Project
Bicton MLA Lisa O'Malley, who serves as a patron of the club, expressed her enthusiasm for the transformation. She commended club general manager Damien Gaspar and commodore Troy Cawthan for their efforts in bringing the project to life. "As the patron of this incredible club, it's fantastic to see this area transformed into a welcoming precinct that can also host markets, music, and community events while also enhancing the natural environment," she stated.
Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the vital role that clubs like the Swan Yacht Club play in their communities. "Upgrades like this help them host more events, welcome more visitors, and continue to grow," she said. "Transforming a disused slipway into a vibrant riverfront green space is a fantastic outcome for the club and the local community. It is a beautiful part of the Swan River, and this new space will create more opportunities for people to enjoy the waterfront and take part in community activities."
Historical Context and Future Prospects
Established over a century ago, the Swan Yacht Club has long been a cornerstone of the local community. This latest development not only preserves its rich heritage but also positions it for future growth and increased engagement. The new green space is expected to attract more visitors and foster a stronger sense of community, making the waterfront area more accessible and enjoyable for all.
