ECU Joondalup Open Day Draws Crowds with Future Dreams

Hundreds Flock to Edith Cowan University's Joondalup Campus for Open Day

Hundreds of aspiring students descended upon Edith Cowan University's Joondalup campus on Sunday for a bustling open day, filled with dreams of future careers in fields such as medicine, teaching, and engineering. The leafy campus was alive with visitors, many clutching informational flyers and university merchandise as they envisioned their potential academic paths.

Students Weigh Options Amid Year 12 Pressures

Among the attendees were Year 12 students Lylian Laws and Amelia Jones, who were considering psychology or science degrees. However, they humorously noted that their immediate focus remains on surviving their final year of high school. "We're just trying to survive Year 12," Ms Laws joked, highlighting the balancing act between present challenges and future aspirations.

Exploring Career Transitions and Campus Choices

Nearby, Daniela Soares, currently working as an education assistant, attended the open day with friends she playfully called her "emotional support friends" while exploring a transition into teaching. Although ECU's upcoming Perth city campus has garnered recent headlines, Ms Soares expressed a preference for the Joondalup campus due to its proximity to her home. ECU remains the only university in Perth with a metropolitan campus located north of the river, offering convenient access for northern suburbs residents.

Future Students Drawn to City and Suburban Campuses

Year 11 students Hamish Holman and Annalise Schinkel were just beginning to think about their university options, with the new CBD campus particularly appealing. "There's lots of stuff in the city, and so easy to get on the train so that's really appealing," Mr Holman said, underscoring the allure of urban accessibility. ECU's Joondalup campus continues to host many of the university's science, engineering, health, and education courses, while the new city campus will focus on business, law, and creative arts.

Innovative Programs Showcase Creative Thinking

The university's slogan, "Creative thinkers made here," was on full display with demonstrations of new offerings, including a purpose-built Apple technology-enabled learning space. This program allows students to develop creative problem-solving skills by using Apple technology to identify future challenges and design innovative solutions. The intensive course is open to a wide range of participants, from high school students to professionals seeking to expand their skill sets.

Open Day Focuses on Future Possibilities

For many visitors wandering the campus, the open day was less about making immediate decisions and more about imagining potential futures. The event provided a valuable opportunity to explore educational pathways and connect with university resources, fostering a sense of excitement and possibility among attendees.
