Centenarian Elaine Hodge Keeps Easter Magic Alive with Decorations and Traditions
Elaine Hodge, a 100-year-old resident of Elermore Vale in Newcastle, has witnessed immense change over her lifetime, but her passion for holiday celebrations remains steadfast. As she approaches her 101st birthday in October, Mrs Hodge continues to meticulously decorate her home for Easter and Christmas, a tradition she has maintained for more than two decades.
"I love it," she said, emphasizing her joy in creating festive displays. Mrs Hodge even crafts her own decorations, including an Easter bouquet and illuminated Easter eggs that light up at night. "I enjoy doing it," she added, showcasing her creative spirit that has defined her life.
A Lifetime of Creativity and Resilience
From her early years, Mrs Hodge has been a prolific knitter, making dresses from scratch and even fashioning a dress from parachutes brought home by her late husband George from his air force service. Her love for flowers and gardening began in her teens, where she made small bouquets, later working at a florist in Merewether to arrange wedding bouquets.
Reflecting on Newcastle's transformation, Mrs Hodge noted, "The whole of Newcastle has changed. There's no streets that look the same as they did back then." She recalls attending high school on a site now used for local markets in Adamstown and the social highlight of Friday night shopping.
Love and Legacy in Newcastle
Mrs Hodge's century-long journey is anchored by a love story that began at the Cardiff Masonic Hall, where she met George, a ballroom dancer. "I kept looking at George and his friend encouraged him to ask me for a dance," she shared. "I nearly died when he started to walk towards me. I couldn't believe it." Describing it as love at first sight, they married in 1945 and raised four children.
George, a carpenter, built numerous houses across Newcastle and Sydney, including their family home in Cardiff Heights. Beyond decorations, Mrs Hodge is renowned for her baking, with her kitchen often filled with the aroma of mushroom cakes and caramel slices. "I make so many caramel slices," she said.
Overcoming Challenges with Positivity
Born on October 6, 1925, Mrs Hodge has experienced both highs and lows, including the Depression era when she and her siblings attended school without shoes due to financial hardship. Despite these challenges, she credits her longevity to the people around her. "I've always loved being around people," she stated, highlighting the importance of community in her life.
As Newcastle evolves, Elaine Hodge's enduring traditions and vibrant spirit serve as an inspiration, proving that age is no barrier to keeping holiday magic alive. Her story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of cherished customs in a changing world.
