Cyclone Narelle has carved a path of destruction through Western Australia, leaving towns and communities grappling with severe damage as the category 2 system tracks southward. On Friday, the cyclone hammered the North West region, severing power to thousands of properties, flooding homes, ripping roofs off buildings, and uprooting trees. The storm forced the North West Shelf offline, disrupting three-quarters of WA's gas production and over 8% of global output, compounding impacts from earlier hits in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The most severe impacts were felt along the Pilbara and northern Gascoyne coasts, where winds reached up to 260km/h. Communities like Shark Bay, Kalbarri, and Geraldton braced for the storm's onslaught, with wind gusts up to 125km/h expected. Despite the devastation, there have been no reports of serious injuries so far. Premier Roger Cook called the situation "very confronting," while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged federal support for impacted regions.
Widespread Damage and Economic Fallout
The cyclone's wrath extended beyond residential areas, with significant damage reported at tourism hotspots like Bullara Station Stay, where half the homestead roof was ripped off. Carnarvon's banana growers feared total crop loss after recent cyclone Mitchell, exacerbating economic strains. Karratha's Mayor expressed dissatisfaction with warning systems, noting inconsistencies despite the town escaping major fury. As Narelle continues to weaken, moving south toward Jurien Bay, Perth avoided the worst but still experienced heavy rainfall, with evacuation centers set up in Beechboro for those unable to reach Geraldton.
