Tragic Boating Incident Claims Life in Tasmania, Three Rescued Including Child

A devastating boating accident off the northwest coast of Tasmania has resulted in the death of a man, while three others, including a young child, were successfully rescued after their vessel sank. The incident unfolded during a fishing trip near Robbins Island, highlighting the dangers of maritime activities in remote areas.

Details of the Fishing Trip and Rescue Operation

The four individuals were camping at Montagu and embarked on a fishing expedition near Robbins Island on Saturday around 5:30 pm. When the group failed to return overnight, concerned relatives raised the alarm at approximately 8 am on Sunday. In response, emergency services deployed a Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a marine rescue vessel to search the area intensively.

By about 1 pm on Sunday, rescuers located a 27-year-old woman, a 33-year-old man, and a six-year-old child on Big Stony Petrel Island, a remote and uninhabited outcrop. They had managed to reach the island after their boat sank north of Robbins Island. The trio was transported to the North West Regional Hospital for medical assessment, with police confirming they sustained no physical injuries.

Search for Missing Man and Tragic Outcome

The search efforts continued throughout Sunday and into Monday for the fourth member of the group, a 36-year-old man. Sadly, police announced on Monday afternoon that his body had been discovered on the eastern side of Robbins Island. Authorities expressed their condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this difficult time." A report will be prepared for the coroner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Recent Similar Incident in Hobart

This boating accident follows another recent maritime tragedy in Tasmania. Just a week earlier, the body of a 23-year-old French man was found at Hobart’s waterfront. He had been onboard a scientific vessel docked near Princes Wharf 1 when he jumped into the water around 3:55 am last Tuesday. After authorities were alerted to his disappearance, police divers entered the water and recovered his body near Franklin Wharf.

Tasmania Police Inspector John Toohey commented on the incident, noting that the man appeared to have jumped into the water voluntarily. He issued a warning against swimming at nighttime, particularly in areas like Hobart’s waterfront, due to the inherent risks involved.
