The Victorian government has unveiled a $15 million funding package aimed at upgrading lifesaving clubs and providing new marine search and rescue vehicles in Torquay. This investment is set to bolster coastal safety along the Surf Coast, ensuring that volunteer lifesavers have the resources they need to protect beachgoers.
Funding Breakdown
The package includes $10 million for capital works at lifesaving clubs across the region, with a focus on improving facilities for volunteers. An additional $5 million will be allocated to the purchase of new marine search and rescue vehicles, which will enhance response capabilities in emergencies.
Torquay Lifesaving Club Upgrade
The Torquay Lifesaving Club is set to receive a significant portion of the funding, allowing for a much-needed upgrade to its clubhouse. The renovations will include expanded training areas, improved storage for equipment, and better amenities for members. Club president Sarah Mitchell expressed gratitude, stating that the upgrade will help attract and retain volunteers.
New Rescue Vehicles
The new marine search and rescue vehicles will be stationed at key locations along the coast, including Torquay. These vehicles are designed to operate in challenging conditions and will be used for both beach patrols and offshore rescues. They are expected to be operational by next summer.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said the investment underscores the government's commitment to community safety. "Our lifesaving clubs do an incredible job, and this funding will ensure they have the facilities and equipment to continue their vital work," she said.
Local MP for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman also welcomed the announcement, noting that the upgrades will benefit not only Torquay but the entire Surf Coast region. He highlighted the importance of volunteer rescue services, especially during peak tourist seasons.
The funding is part of a broader state government initiative to improve coastal safety infrastructure. Similar projects have been announced for other regions, including the Mornington Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road. The Torquay upgrades are expected to be completed by 2025.
