Cyclone Narelle Strikes Western Australia with Forceful Landfall

Tropical Cyclone Narelle has officially made landfall on the North West Cape of Western Australia, bringing with it severe wind gusts and heavy rainfall that are causing significant disruptions across the region. The system, which is currently impacting the west Pilbara and Gascoyne coasts, has led to reports of roofs being blown off and trees uprooted due to its destructive forces.

Intense Wind Gusts and Weather Conditions

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Cyclone Narelle is producing wind gusts of up to 220 km/h, with winds near the centre reaching 155 km per hour. Very destructive gusts of up to 200 km/hr are occurring over the North West Cape, including areas such as Exmouth and south along the west coast to Coral Bay and Cape Cuvier. Carnarvon could experience gusts up to 190 km/h this afternoon, while Denham may see strong winds of up to 180 km/h late Friday or early Saturday.

Weakening System but Continued Threats

The cyclone has begun to weaken but is expected to remain a category 4 system for a few more hours. On Saturday, Narelle is forecast to weaken as it moves quickly to the south southeast over land, with impacts extending to the Central West and further inland across the South West Land Division. The Bureau notes that the strongest winds are likely to be on the eastern side of the system during this period.

DFES has emphasized that there is a threat to lives and homes, urging immediate action. Residents are advised to stay in the strongest part of their buildings and avoid doors and windows to ensure safety.

Community Impact and Response

Exmouth is being particularly hard-hit by the cyclone, with severe winds and rainfall causing damage to infrastructure. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates and guidance to help communities navigate the dangerous conditions.
