Fowl Play in Austinmer as Barefoot Bandit Strikes

A brazen thief has been caught on camera stealing a chicken during a nighttime raid on a home in Austinmer, with police now hunting the barefoot bandit. The incident occurred on Kirton Street, where the property's security system captured clear footage of the alleged theft.

Wollongong Police District Chief Inspector Dan Richardson confirmed the chicken was taken from its coop. The male suspect was captured on CCTV wearing black shorts, a black t-shirt, and a grey cap as he calmly walked past a caravan parked in the driveway with the bird tucked under his arm.

Egg Price Crisis Adds Context to Chicken Theft

While the motivation behind the theft remains unknown, the crime comes amid Australia's ongoing egg supply crisis. Egg prices have increased by 27% over the last two years due to multiple avian influenza outbreaks that began in April 2024.

Current supermarket prices reflect this shortage, with a dozen cage-free eggs costing $5.80 at Woolworths or Coles, while free-range options start at $6 and can reach up to $15.40 for a pack of 12. Australians consume approximately 250 eggs per person annually, making the staple food item particularly valuable in the current market.

Police Appeal for Public Assistance

Chief Inspector Richardson stated that the homeowner reported the theft and provided the crucial CCTV footage to investigators. Police believe the male visible in the footage may be able to assist with their inquiries into the incident.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote police report number C104388588. The investigation continues as police work to identify the barefoot suspect captured in the nighttime footage.
