In a welcome development for drivers across Perth, average fuel prices have tumbled to their lowest levels since the onset of the Middle East conflict, with forecasts predicting a drop below $2 per litre. This significant shift offers much-needed financial relief for households grappling with recent record highs.
Sharp Decline in Petrol and Diesel Averages
The metropolitan average for regular unleaded petrol is set to fall to 197.5 cents on Saturday, marking the first time it has dipped under $2 since the war began. Similarly, diesel drivers can expect relief, with the average price projected to hit 289.6 cents tomorrow, also falling below the $2 threshold for the first time in this period.
This downward trend represents a dramatic pivot from just over a month ago, when prices surged toward $2.07, causing considerable strain on West Australian budgets. At that time, an average of 188.7 cents was viewed as a burden, highlighting how quickly market conditions have changed.
Best Deals and Retailer Comparisons
For budget-conscious motorists, seeking out specific local retailers can yield substantial savings. In the metropolitan area, Vibe Welshpool will offer the cheapest unleaded petrol at 183.7 cents, closely followed by Atlas Fuel in Ascot at 183.9 cents.
Across major brands, Vibe petrol stations maintain the lowest unleaded average at 190.0 cents, while Caltex remains the most expensive at 200.6 cents. Other notable averages include BP at 198.6 cents, Ampol at 198.1 cents, Reddy Express at 196.9 cents, and 7-Eleven at 199.7 cents.
A FuelWatch spokesperson confirmed that 53 percent of retailers will sell unleaded petrol below the average tomorrow, reinforcing the positive trend for consumers.

According to the latest ACCC report, Perth currently boasts the lowest prices for both unleaded petrol and diesel in Australia, with expectations of further short-term declines as international price movements filter through locally.
Peter Khoury, a spokesperson for the National Roads and Motorists Association, attributed the price drop to plummeting international benchmarks, noting that global oil prices have seen significant falls since a ceasefire was announced in the Middle East. He emphasized that recent events, such as a refinery explosion in Geelong, have not impacted Australian prices, with gas oil dropping by $120 in the past two weeks driving the decline.
However, Khoury cautioned that the market remains highly volatile, dependent on regional stability. He stated, "For it to be sustained and continue to be passed on, we need that ceasefire to hold and we need it to become actual peace and we need the Strait of Hormuz to open permanently."

Experts are hesitant to predict when prices might return to previous lows, citing unknowns such as damage to Middle Eastern refineries and potential global recessionary pressures. Khoury described this as the second oil shock in four years, urging a swift resolution to mitigate further economic disruption.
