Leighton Beach Speed Limit Cut To 30kmh For Safety

The speed limit on roads around Leighton Beach in North Fremantle will be reduced to 30km/h from April 6, following a safety review. Main Roads confirmed the change applies to Leighton Beach Boulevard and Freeman Loop.

The decision came after residents raised concerns in December 2025 that the previous speed limit was no longer suitable for the area's increased activity. The City of Fremantle then submitted a formal request for a speed review.

A Main Roads spokesperson said the lower limit aims to ensure vehicle speeds are appropriate for the road environment and enhance safety for pedestrians accessing the beach. The area is a recreational precinct where pedestrians and cyclists mix with vehicles.

Resident Darren Bracewell presented a petition to the council on February 10, backed by 28 of 30 residents in his complex. He argued the 30km/h limit would be a low-cost, reversible solution requiring only two new signs.

Bracewell noted that Leighton Beach has become a year-round precinct with hospitality venues and a surf club, creating high pedestrian traffic. He cited statistics showing pedestrian survival rates rise from 10% at 50km/h to 90% at 30km/h.

Councillor Melanie Clark supported the change, saying residents had requested traffic calming due to larger cars and speeding. Main Roads reported no history of crashes on the boulevard.
