A 35-year-old woman has drowned at Ellery Creek Big Hole, a popular swimming spot near Alice Springs. Northern Territory police received reports around 12:50pm on Sunday that bystanders were performing CPR on the woman at the location.
St John Ambulance took over resuscitation efforts upon arrival, but the woman could not be revived and died at the scene. Police initially reported the woman's age as 25, but corrected it to 35 in a later statement.
The woman was from interstate and had been traveling with friends. Next of kin have been notified. The cause of death is believed to be drowning, though an autopsy has not yet been completed.
Ellery Creek Big Hole was closed to the public while police investigated but reopened on Monday.
