Lifeblood Issues Urgent Call for Blood Donors in Western Australia Over Easter

Red Cross Lifeblood has made an urgent appeal for more blood donors in Western Australia, as the state faces a critical need for over 1300 donations between March 31 and April 10. This call aims to ensure sufficient blood supplies are available for patients during the Easter long weekend, a period when demand often spikes due to increased road accidents and ongoing medical treatments.

Specific Blood Types in High Demand

Lifeblood is particularly seeking donors with type O and A blood, as reserves of these types are under significant pressure. Cath Stone, Lifeblood's donor experience director, highlighted that while there was a surge in donations following the Bondi terror attack in December, appointment numbers have since declined leading up to Easter. She noted that 23,000 of the first-time donors who responded after the attack had type O or A blood, emphasizing the ongoing need beyond single events.

Challenges and Regional Impacts

Compounding the shortage, fuel supply disruptions are affecting some donors' ability to reach donation centres in regional areas. Lifeblood is urging individuals who can donate to book appointments promptly to help mitigate this issue. Donor centres across the nation will be open, including on Good Friday, to accommodate the increased demand during the long weekend.

Plasma Donations Also Critical

In addition to whole blood, plasma donations are in high demand, accounting for approximately half of all donations required this Easter. Lifeblood encourages both new and regular donors to contribute, as blood is needed daily, and the Easter period often sees a dip in donations due to breaks taken by regular donors.

To schedule a donation, individuals can visit lifeblood.com.au, use the Lifeblood app, or call 13 14 95. This effort is crucial to support healthcare services and ensure blood is available for those in need across Western Australia.
