Golden Hour Living: Aussies Transform Backyards for Twilight Entertaining
Aussies Invest Record Highs in Backyard Transformations

Australian homeowners are leading a dramatic shift in how we use our backyards, with investment in outdoor spaces predicted to hit record highs this year. The focus has moved beyond simple sun protection to creating versatile areas designed for the magical twilight hours.

The Rise of Golden-Hour Living

According to stylist Alexandra Hand from Australian Outdoor Living, the pandemic-born trend of at-home entertainment continues to strengthen, driving significant growth in backyard transformations across the nation. Spending on backyards is growing at approximately seven percent per annum as Australians reclaim these spaces not just for relaxation but as carefully curated sanctuaries.

"Australians are reclaiming their backyards - not just as places to unwind but as stylish sanctuaries designed for golden-hour living," Ms Hand said. This year, more homeowners are specifically designing for those in-between hours when the temperature cools and outdoor areas can feel less inviting.

Creating the Perfect Twilight Atmosphere

The new approach marks a distinct departure from traditional summer planning focused solely on shade and heat resilience. Instead, the golden-hour trend prioritises mood and atmosphere through thoughtful design elements.

Designers are increasingly layering zoned spaces with distinct areas for casual dining and relaxed lounging, often using outdoor rugs and cushions to define these zones. Fire pits or heating features have become essential, serving as natural gathering points as evening temperatures dip.

Integrated products are leading this transformation, with automated retractable outdoor blinds allowing spaces to adapt seamlessly with changing light conditions. These blinds can also reduce cooler evening breezes without compromising the view, extending comfortable outdoor time well past sunset.

Lighting and Heating as Design Choices

Lighting plays a crucial role in the golden-hour backyard. Adding built-in lighting such as LED strip details or overhead pendants helps the outdoor area feel like a natural extension of the interior living space rather than an afterthought.

Outdoor heating has firmly entered the mainstream, evolving from portable fire pits to fully integrated gas fire tables. Warmth is becoming a design choice as much as a practical one, according to Ms Hand.

"The appeal of golden hour is universal, and the right mix of shading, along with warm lighting and suitable heating ensures you can enjoy it in style," she explained. The result is a space that serves dual purposes: practical and family-friendly by day, transforming into an entertainment hub for slowing down and socialising as the sun sets.
