Tragic Loss of Elderly Driver in Canberra Car Park Incident
A 90-year-old man has died in hospital following a crash at a north Canberra car park, according to ACT Policing. The driver, who succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning, March 30, 2026, had been receiving medical treatment for approximately one week after the incident.
Details of the Collision and Investigation
The crash occurred around 11:30 am on March 23 at the Gungahlin Village shopping centre underground parking area. The vehicle involved was a silver Toyota Camry, which collided with a pillar in a single-vehicle accident. An ACT Policing spokeswoman confirmed that the driver was the sole occupant at the time.
Emergency services treated the man at the scene before transporting him to hospital with serious injuries, but he tragically passed away early on Monday. If the death is linked to injuries from the collision, it will be counted as the seventh road fatality in the Australian Capital Territory for 2026.
ACT Road Policing's Major Collision team is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner. Police have appealed to any witnesses or individuals with dash-cam footage who have not yet come forward to contact Crime Stoppers ACT, referencing number 8342232.
Context of Road Safety in the ACT
This incident follows another recent tragedy where an 89-year-old pedestrian died in hospital after a car crash in Lyneham on February 17. In 2025, nine people lost their lives on ACT roads, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to assist with the investigation. The loss underscores the importance of road safety measures, particularly for elderly drivers and pedestrians.
