A man has been charged after allegedly striking another man in the head with an axe during an early-morning altercation in Brisbane's northern suburbs.

Emergency services were called to Fifth Avenue in Sandgate just before 1am on Saturday following reports of a dispute between two neighbouring properties.

Police allege a 61-year-old man struck a 22-year-old man with an axe, leaving the younger man with a large laceration to his head.

The victim was rushed to The Prince Charles Hospital for treatment, where he remains in a stable condition.

The older man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.
