Two separate crashes occurred within 45 minutes on a wet Melbourne road, causing significant traffic chaos for commuters during the morning peak hour. The incidents happened on the Princes Highway in Geelong, with emergency services rushing to the scenes.
First Crash Blocks Lanes
The first crash took place around 7:15 am on Tuesday, involving two vehicles near the intersection with the Ring Road. The collision blocked the left lane, leading to long delays for southbound traffic. Paramedics treated one person for minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt.
Second Crash Follows Quickly
Just 45 minutes later, a second crash occurred about one kilometre further south, near the Waurn Ponds exit. This incident involved a single vehicle that lost control on the wet road and struck a guardrail. The driver was unhurt, but the car sustained significant damage.
Wet Weather Blamed
Police have warned drivers to slow down and increase following distances in wet conditions. The heavy rain that fell overnight left roads slippery, contributing to the crashes. Traffic management crews worked to clear the wreckage and reopen all lanes by mid-morning.
Commuter Delays
Motorists faced delays of up to 30 minutes as traffic banked up along the highway. Alternative routes were advised, including using the Surf Coast Highway or local roads. Public transport services also experienced minor disruptions due to the congestion.
Authorities remind all road users to exercise caution during adverse weather and to check traffic updates before travelling.
