The Socceroos have rallied around 18-year-old Lucas Herrington after he missed a penalty in the World Cup round of 32 shootout defeat to Egypt. Herrington, the youngest starter Australia has ever fielded at a men's World Cup, saw his spot-kick saved, contributing to a 4-2 shootout loss after a 1-1 draw.
Teammates offer support
Aziz Behich and Jackson Irvine were quick to console Herrington. 'It's part of the game,' Behich said. 'I just told him that for him to even just go up there and put the ball down was enough for us.' Irvine added that the team's belief in Herrington remains unwavering, noting his maturity beyond his years.
Shootout heartbreak
Australia's goalkeeper gamble backfired, with coach Graham Arnold's decision to start a less experienced keeper failing to pay off. Egypt advanced to the last 16, while the Socceroos continue to search for their first World Cup knockout win. The match saw Australia take an early lead through a Jackson Irvine header, but Egypt equalized in the second half before dominating the shootout.
Herrington's miss was the decisive moment, but teammates insist the blame should not fall on the teenager. 'He showed incredible courage to take that penalty at his age,' said captain Mathew Ryan. 'We win together, we lose together.'
The Socceroos now return home, with the focus shifting to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Despite the disappointment, the team's young core, including Herrington, provides hope for the future.
