Colombia secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in the World Cup last 32 match on Saturday, booking their place in the quarter-finals. The match, played at the Estadio Monumental in Lima, saw Colombia dominate possession but face a resilient Ghanaian side that threatened on the counter-attack.
First-half dominance
Colombia took the lead in the 23rd minute when Juan Cuadrado curled a free-kick over the wall and into the top corner, leaving Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori with no chance. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the South Americans, who controlled the midfield through James Rodriguez and Wilmar Barrios.
Ghana nearly equalised just before half-time, but Andre Ayew's header was brilliantly saved by Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina. The Colombians went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead, having recorded 62% possession and five shots on target.
Second-half drama
The second half saw Ghana push forward in search of an equaliser, and they were rewarded in the 58th minute. A swift counter-attack ended with Thomas Partey playing a perfectly weighted through ball to Ayew, who slotted past Ospina to make it 1-1.
Colombia responded immediately, and within five minutes they regained the lead. Duván Zapata rose highest to meet a cross from Santiago Arias, powering a header into the net from close range. The goal was Zapata's third of the tournament.
Late pressure and statistics
Ghana pushed for a second equaliser in the final stages, but Colombia held firm. Ospina made a crucial save from a Kudus Mohammed shot in the 83rd minute, and the Colombian defence blocked several other attempts. The final statistics showed Colombia with 54% possession, 12 shots (6 on target) to Ghana's 10 (4 on target).
According to FIFA, Colombia completed 82% of their passes compared to Ghana's 78%, and won 18 tackles to Ghana's 14. The victory sets up a quarter-final clash with either Brazil or Mexico.
Post-match reactions
Colombia coach Reinaldo Rueda praised his team's resilience. "We knew Ghana would be tough, but we showed character to come back after they equalised. The players executed the game plan perfectly," he said.
Ghana coach Otto Addo expressed disappointment but acknowledged Colombia's quality. "We gave everything, but Colombia's experience made the difference. We are proud of our performance and will learn from this," he stated.
