The Newcastle Knights have emphatically answered questions about their credentials without star playmaker Jesse Southwell, grinding out an 18-4 victory over the Cronulla Sharks in a fiery NRLW season opener at Ocean Protect Stadium on Thursday night.
Knights Overcome Early Challenges
After Southwell's high-profile off-season move to Brisbane, many doubted whether the Knights could replicate last year's preliminary final run. However, they silenced the critics with three tries to one, showcasing a determined defensive effort and opportunistic attack.
Shanice Parker opened the scoring for Newcastle in the eighth minute after Sharks centre Annessa Biddle was sin-binned for a hip-drop tackle on Knights fullback Lilly-Ann White. Newcastle capitalised on the numerical advantage, spreading the ball right for Parker to dive over in the corner.
Second-Half Drama
The Sharks tightened their defence in the second half, but Newcastle's five-eighth Kirra Dibb broke the deadlock with a pinpoint grubber kick that set up a try for Fane Finau in the 45th minute. Dibb later added a penalty goal, and interchange Simone Karpani crossed for her first NRLW try to seal the win.
"Coach (Ben Jeffries) had a big emphasis on us playing some free-flowing footy, and not having a fear of that freedom," hooker Olivia Higgins told Nine. "I'm super proud of the girls, especially our halves. I think Georgia (Roche) and Kirra did a great job to allow us to play the style that we want."
Fiery Moments and Injuries
The match featured several heated incidents. Newcastle's Georgia Roche was sin-binned in the final seconds of the first half for contact with the leg of opposing half Chantay Kiria-Ratu. Cronulla centre Rhiannon Byers levelled the scores early in the second half with a powerful run through the Knights defence.
The Sharks face potential selection headaches after interchange Stephanie Faulkner suffered an ankle injury in a tackle during the first half. Prop Caitlan Johnston-Green was also placed on report for a crusher tackle on Knights captain Yasmin Meakes.
Cronulla are already without captain and NSW representative Tiana Penitani Gray due to a knee injury, and the additional losses could hamper their bid to replicate last season's preliminary final finish.
