Kane Cornes Delivers Scathing Critique of Zach Merrett's Performance
Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes has launched a blistering attack on Essendon star Zach Merrett, accusing him of 'giving up' during the Bombers' recent AFL clash against North Melbourne. This harsh assessment came after Merrett delivered one of the worst performances of his illustrious career, managing just 10 disposals in the Saturday night match.
Merrett's Struggles Under Close Attention
Merrett faced intense pressure from Kangaroos youngster Finn O'Sullivan, who effectively shut down the veteran midfielder. Despite laying nine tackles and kicking a goal, Merrett's output was well below his usual standards, marking a continued decline from last season when he secured his sixth club best and fairest award.
The 30-year-old's tumultuous off-season, which included a failed trade request to Hawthorn and his subsequent stepping down as captain, has added to the scrutiny. Although he was recently reinvited into the leadership group after Essendon's demoralising loss to Port Adelaide, Cornes remains unconvinced.
Cornes' Detailed Criticism of Merrett's Efforts
On The Agenda Setters, Cornes elaborated on his observations, noting that Merrett has shifted to an 'outside receiver' role this season. He highlighted several instances where Merrett appeared to avoid contact and physicality, particularly in missed tackles and being easily pushed off the ball by O'Sullivan.
'I never thought I would say this about Zach Merrett, but I thought he gave up,' Cornes stated. 'He doesn't want contact. He's playing against a 25-gamer who was outstanding and hungry, but there was a lack of physicality from Merrett.'
Cornes expressed disappointment, recalling Merrett's proud history as a six-time best and fairest winner, and questioned his leadership over the past few weeks.
Riewoldt Calls for Teammate Support Amid Criticism
In contrast, St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt offered sympathy for Merrett, acknowledging his long-term contributions to Essendon. Riewoldt urged Bombers teammates to provide on-field support when Merrett is being tagged, suggesting that isolation during play exacerbates his struggles.
'I'm feeling sorry for him at this point,' Riewoldt said. 'When you make him stay, you've got to show him some love and help him. The Bombers did not help him—are they blocking for him or holding a grudge over his trade request?'
This debate highlights the ongoing challenges for Merrett as he navigates form slumps and team dynamics in the current AFL season.
