GWS Giants CEO Dave Matthews Announces Departure After 2026 Season

Dave Matthews, the chief executive officer of the GWS Giants, has confirmed he will step down from his position at the conclusion of the 2026 AFL season. This decision marks the end of a tenure spanning more than 15 years with the league's youngest club, a period that began even before the Giants officially entered the competition.

A Legacy of Leadership and Growth

Matthews joined the Giants in 2011, prior to their inception into the AFL, and has been instrumental in shaping the club from its formative stages. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the organization, acknowledging the collective efforts of players, staff, members, and fans in building the club's identity and success.

"It has been a privilege to lead the Giants, and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has contributed to our journey," Matthews said. "With the club's foundations now well established, I feel the time is right to pursue new challenges. The AFL commission made a bold move by starting an 18th club, recognizing the growth potential in Sydney and Canberra. Building this club in a competitive market has been both a tremendous challenge and a rewarding opportunity, requiring immense commitment from many over a long period."

He added, "I am incredibly proud of our achievements together and firmly believe the Giants have an exciting future ahead."

Tributes from Club and AFL Leadership

Giants chair Tim Reed extended heartfelt thanks to Matthews on behalf of the staff, players, and board, highlighting his significant impact on the organization. "The club extends its sincere gratitude to David for his leadership, passion, and tireless dedication over more than a decade. His legacy will remain embedded in the fabric of the Giants," Mr. Reed stated.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon also praised Matthews for his contributions, noting his broader role in AFL strategies since 1998. "David has played a major role in developing and leading AFL strategies, with expansion being a key focus during his time. His creativity and resilience have positioned the GIANTS where they are today. Personally, I look forward to his ongoing contributions to the growth of our game," Dillon remarked.

Looking Ahead to the Future

As Matthews prepares for his departure after the 2026 season, the GWS Giants are poised to continue their development in the AFL landscape. His leadership has been pivotal in establishing the club in markets like Sydney and Canberra, and his exit signals a new chapter for both him and the organization. The search for a successor is expected to begin in the coming years, ensuring a smooth transition for the club's ongoing operations and strategic goals.
