The $20 million refurbishment of Belmont Racecourse has been hailed as a resounding success on its opening day, with punters and officials alike praising the upgraded facilities and vibrant atmosphere. The historic venue, known as the home of winter racing in Western Australia, reopened its gates to a crowd of enthusiastic racegoers eager to experience the transformed space.
Upgrades Enhance Race Day Experience
The extensive renovations include a new grandstand, improved dining options, and state-of-the-art betting facilities. The grandstand offers panoramic views of the track, while the dining precinct features a range of culinary offerings from local vendors. Betting areas have been modernized with digital screens and self-service kiosks, streamlining the wagering process for patrons.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) chief executive Ian Edwards expressed delight at the outcome. "The feedback from racegoers has been overwhelmingly positive," he said. "We have created a world-class facility that not only enhances the racing experience but also sets a new standard for winter racing in Australia."
Punters Praise New Look
Regular attendee Mark Thompson said the upgrades were "a game-changer." "I've been coming here for years, and this is like a completely different venue. The new grandstand is fantastic, and the food options are much better than before," he said. Another punter, Sarah Jenkins, noted the improved accessibility and family-friendly amenities. "It's great to see the track investing in making racing more inclusive. There are plenty of spaces for families to enjoy the day," she added.
Economic Boost for Local Community
The refurbishment is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the local area, attracting more visitors to Belmont and supporting local businesses. The project created hundreds of jobs during construction and will continue to support employment through ongoing operations.
Western Australian Racing Minister Tony Buti said the investment underscored the government's commitment to the racing industry. "This refurbishment is a testament to the strength of our racing sector. It will attract new audiences and ensure the long-term viability of winter racing in Perth," he said.
Future Plans for Belmont
RWWA has indicated further improvements are in the pipeline, including enhanced landscaping and additional hospitality upgrades. The venue is also set to host several feature race meetings throughout the winter season, including the Belmont Sprint and the Winterbottom Stakes.
The successful opening day sets a promising tone for the remainder of the season, with officials confident that the refurbished Belmont Racecourse will become a premier destination for racing enthusiasts across the state.
