Steve Erceg Targets UFC Triumph in Perth Showdown with Tim Elliott

West Australian mixed martial artist Steve Erceg is gearing up for a pivotal UFC flyweight bout against American contender Tim Elliott, scheduled for May 2 at Perth's RAC Arena. This highly anticipated match marks Erceg's return to the octagon after a hiatus, with the local fighter determined to secure his first victory in front of a home crowd.

Homecoming Fight After Personal Milestones

Erceg, who holds a professional record of 13 wins and 4 losses, last competed in August, where he snapped a three-fight losing streak by defeating Ode Osbourne. Following that win, the 30-year-old took time off to get married, making this upcoming event his comeback fight. He joins fellow West Australians Jack Della Maddalena and Quillan Salkilld on the card, all set to perform before friends and family in what promises to be a massive fight night in Perth later this year.

"I want to feel like a gladiator in the Colosseum after a win, and that's what RAC Arena will be like," Erceg told The West Australian, emphasizing the electric atmosphere he anticipates. He reflected on his previous experience at the venue, adding, "It will make the after-party way better; last time it was pretty crappy to be honest."

Redemption and Ranking Ambitions

This fight holds extra significance for Erceg, as it offers a chance to avenge his first-round knockout loss to New Zealander Kai Kara-France in 2024, his only other UFC bout at RAC Arena. A win over Elliott, who is ranked No. 11 with a record of 21 wins, 1 loss, and 13 draws, could propel Erceg back up the flyweight rankings and into title contention.

Erceg has been refining his approach, stating he learned the need to be "meaner" to compete at the highest level. "I sat back and looked at how I was fighting, mentally how I was approaching the fight, and what I thought I was doing compared to what I was actually doing," he explained. "Basically, I didn't like the fact that I didn't feel like I was fighting; I was competing. And I think we're in the hurt business for a reason, and a lot of people get away with bad technique because they're meaner than the other guy."

Additional Fights Announced for Perth Event

In other news from the UFC Perth card, iconic Australian heavyweight Tai "Bam Bam" Tuivasa is set to face Sean Sharaf in a high-profile bout. The event will also feature:

  • Junior Tafa battling Kevin Christian in a three-round light heavyweight contest.
  • Sydney's Cam Rowston going toe-to-toe with fellow middleweight Robert Bryczek.
  • Jacob "Mamba" Malkoun from Sydney taking on Gerald "GM3" Meerschaert in the middleweight division.

These matchups add to the excitement, ensuring a night of thrilling action for MMA fans in Western Australia and beyond. Erceg's quest for redemption and a home crowd win underscores the personal and professional stakes at play, making this a must-watch event in the UFC calendar.
