Supercars Cancels Taupo Final Race Amid Cyclone Vaianu Threat

Supercars has made the unprecedented decision to cancel the final race of the Taupo round in New Zealand due to the imminent arrival of Cyclone Vaianu on the North Island. The third race of the weekend, originally scheduled for Sunday, had been moved forward in an attempt to avoid the worsening weather, but with the cyclone expected to hit earlier than predicted, all racing activities on Sunday have been called off.

Unprecedented Weather Disruption in Supercars History

Interim Supercars boss Barclay Nettlefold described the situation as "an unprecedented event that has never occurred in the history of the Supercars Championship." He expressed deep regret over the impact on fans who traveled to Taupō, emphasizing that safety was the top priority. "A cyclone of this intensity leaves no other option, and the safety of everyone at the circuit has to come first," Nettlefold stated.

To mitigate the disappointment, the cancelled race, which is the 10th of the season, will now be added to the historic round in Christchurch next weekend. Nettlefold added, "We're delighted to be in a position to make it up to fans and all our partners by adding a race to the Christchurch event."

Schedule Adjustments and Racing Highlights

Earlier in the weekend, conditions were ideal, with local hero Ryan Wood topping practice two on Friday. However, anticipating extreme winds and rain, Supercars officials made significant schedule changes:

  • The two races on Saturday were brought forward by 30 minutes.
  • The top-10 shootout was removed from the program.
  • The main event, a 60-lap, 200km race, was shifted from Sunday to Saturday afternoon.

In qualifying, resurgent championship leader Brodie Kostecki secured pole position for the first race on Saturday, while Wood achieved the fastest time for the second race. These adjustments aimed to maximize racing opportunities before the cyclone's arrival, but ultimately, the severity of Cyclone Vaianu necessitated the full cancellation of Sunday's events.

This cancellation marks a significant moment in Supercars history, highlighting the challenges posed by extreme weather in motorsport. Fans and teams now look forward to the rescheduled race in Christchurch, where the championship battle will continue under safer conditions.
